We were very fortunate to be able to get away for a couple of days and travel with my cousins, Lee and Karen Souza, visiting from Orange County California.
Lee is my fathers sister’s son. Lee and I are 3 days apart and he too grew up on a dairy. We have great memories of living on a dairy farm as children. We went to the Central Coast and made a stop to visit Chica and my son too. I wasn’t too sure how she would react when I saw her as it has been about a month and a half.
To my happy surprise…she came from the very back of the wash pen to the front (nudging herself the whole way) to get a scratch and a bit of a treat I had bought for her.
(I also want to point out the unedited video of milking and dairy-farming here at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In light of this weeks “newsmaker” at Conklin Dairy in Ohio and the filmed abuse, I think it is important to show the norm, the real deal.
I had read a tweet that was perfect analogy for this black mark on our industry. It read…”thousand of airline flights take off and land safely everyday…but you only hear about the ones that crash”… I can assure you dairy farmers give the greatest importance to cow care and comfort.
Also remember JUNE IS DAIRY MONTH! What is your favorite dairy product?
