Dairy farmer perspective on “tail docking bill” (SB 135 Florez-Amended 6/25/09)
For dairy farmers this is not an issue! I urge the Governor to sign it! The University of California show 90% of current dairymen in our state do not use this practice or ever have (data from the UC Cooperative Extension).
I do not know of a single dairy organization in our state that opposes this bill.
I am a third generation dairy farmer as is my husband. This has NEVER been a practice for our family business.
I know that a long time ago, it was thought that with a docked tail it would reduce mastitis (udder infection) by keeping the tail from “swishing” the manure onto the udder. Research showed that not to be the case.
Dairy farmers have always supported University programs for study and outreach. Within the findings of the these programs they have found that tail docking is not a factor in protecting from mastitis. With those findings most that had adopted that practice discontinued it. AGAIN, the majority had never adopted that practice in the first place.
It is a shame that these celebrities “jumping on the band wagon” as it is not a fight or even issue. The true fact is that the majority, (90%) are not opposing it in the first place.
This is clearly a ploy to shed a negative light on the dairy industry.
The manipulation of the facts and media are really not for the protection of the animals but against the hardworking dairy families who truly have the best interest of their animals and the quality of their product in their best interest.
Don’t be fooled! Listen to all sides before making judgment!
Again, I do not know of a single dairy organization that is opposing the signing of this bill!
So go ahead Governor sign the darn thing!
